What Is Santau?

Santau is a well-known and most feared form of Malay black magic.Basically,it’s a method of poisoning one’s enemies and can be executed in two ways; one is through physical means and the other is through the wind or also called “santau angin”.

Who practices santau

A santau practitioner is usually a witch doctor or a shaman known as “bomoh” and when the santau is done via physical means, the practitioner will poison the target by lacing the food with poisonous ingredients that have been cast with a spell. The ingredients will enter the stomach and will damage it from inside. The target will suffer a slow death.

Methods of santau poisoning

Another way of poisoning a target is to place the poisonous ingredients on the target’s clothing or shoes. The target will feel itchy and will start to scratch incessantly until the skin bleeds and the poisonous ingredients will enter the target’s body through the open wound and will damage the target’s body from within.

When the target has ingested the poison, he/she will start to vomit blood, experience fainting spells and eventually will die when the poison works its way through the inside of the target’s body.

Santau angin

A more mystical form of santau is the santau that is sent through the wind or also known as “santau angin”.This is a much more dangerous form of santau whereby the bomoh would utter a few spells upon some dust and then would blow it towards the target.

The dust would reach the target and enter his/her lungs and thus poisoning him/her.

This type of santau is even more dangerous because anybody that is within the vicinity of the target and has unfortunately inhale the dust would also be poisoned..

According to some beliefs, santau practitioners usually don’t have children because they are often in contact with very poisonous substances which might kill the foetus that are in their wives’ womb.

Catching a santau practitioner

It’s not easy to catch who’s behind a santau spell because this black magic curse is executed not face to face but rather in hiding.Food is given to the target or dust is blown through the wind. The only way to reveal the identity of the santau practitioner is through another bomoh who will use his knowledge in black magic to expose the perpetrator.

If compared to modern poison, the poison used in a santau is quite ineffective and slow to kill the target. It takes a target from a day to maybe months before he/she dies.

Santau is basically a way to immobilize or poison an enemy and its mysticism comes from the fact that the poisonous ingredients have been cast with magic spells that make the victim suffer an agonizing and lingering death.
